Sci-Fi - The Empath

"Mysterious character introduction time! I've used him in a couple of writing prompts on DA, but this is probably the most spoiler-ific of them all (even though it still tells you nothing! Mwah, ha,ha,haha!)." -Casey

The young man tapped his fist against the clear surface of his containment cell. The sound was muffled by the heavy atmosphere that filled the cylinder, but the boy wasn’t really trying to hear the sound. He was actually trying to feel the vibration high above him in the machinery. His captors didn’t really monitor him, he was nothing more than a failed experiment after all, but he monitored them very closely. He was an empath after all and he’d realized over the years that even computers could be understood if you just listened.
Among the endless chatter of information and their mantra of “Forever, forever, forever,” he could just make out the automated repairs that were made to the cell for the wear and tear he was causing. Repairs were ordered and carried out without any interference from the actual AIs that ran the facility.
He focused his thoughts, accessing the nanites coursing through his blood and added one other order to the chatter. “Open containment cell.”
The order was ignored, as usual. He needed to sound more like them, devoid of emotion and centrally focused on the task at hand. “Open,” he ordered once more. There was a whirring sound and then the cylinder surrounding him began to lift. He could feel the heavy air rushing out almost like running water and suddenly he felt so much lighter, like he might float from gravity’s grasp altogether. He took in a deep breath, which was suddenly much easier and then made a run for the exit. He could already sense all the alarms going off.
