Sci-Fi

"This is from my Science Fiction story that is still lacking a title. I started reading through some writing prompts I had on Pinterest and ended up with this scene. I am now seriously considering writing this story as a novel rather than in script format." -Casey

The streets were fully of businessmen carrying brief cases and talking aloud to holograms as they walked. Tall buildings surrounded them, some of them square, more of them strange tessellations that looked like they might fall over at any time. Traffic buzzed high above them on thin rails, weaving through the city much like the citizens below. Everything moved like a well oiled machine, the sun rising above it all to cast long shadows that the citizens hardly even notice.
The harmony was broken in an instant by a young girl with bright red hair. She ran through the pale crowd of strangers at a frantic pace, nearly knocking over people who didn’t notice her in time. No one had to wonder for long about from what she was running. Three police officers shoved through the crowd after her, their black and maroon uniforms flashing at their belts and vests with flashing emergency lights.
No one made any move to stop the girl as she fled and finally she was starting to gain some ground. She diverted from the main road into a shopping center where many different stores lined the streets. The girl quickly ducked into one of these shops and zipped through it straight towards the back door, grabbing a long black cape off a display shelf as she went.
An alarm sounded and people shouted after her as she ran out the door, but she didn’t stop. Instead, she ducked into the very next store down the street and took a moment to dawn the cape and pull the hood over her head. She lingered at a display of neck collars and other rather large pieces of jewelry, blending in with many of the other shopper.
The police ran by the shop’s glass doors and a few moments later, the girl exited the shop through the front entrance. She glanced around nervously and then made her way down to a long winding staircase across the street. The steps led to a platform station above all the shops where a public rail transport was gliding by on a thin wire. As the girl made her way to the platform for the next rail, she smiled to herself under her hood with a sigh of relief.
The transport glided beside her, announcements ringing overhead in an alien language and when the doors opened, about five other officers stood just behind them in the long cylindrical vehicle. The girl turned on her heals and shoved her way back through the crowd that was eager to board the transport. One rather unladylike woman shoved her aside rudely and her hood slipped back.
“There she is!” cried a voice from behind her.
The girl ran back down the steps in a mad panic, jumping down the last flight of stairs and taking off down the streets again. She weaved between as many buildings as she could, hoping to lose her pursuers more easily. She panted heavily and stumbled to the ground, rolling forward a few steps before she regained her footing. She shook her hand lightly at the wrist with a scowl and then dashed in-between two buildings that met just above her, creating a sort of covered alleyway.
The girl ducked behind one of the strange outcropping of the buildings and fought to keep her breathing at no more than a faint hiss. She listened intently for a few moments, but no sirens blared and there were no shots for her capture. She sighed again as she rolled her eyes in exasperation, dropping the cape she had stolen to the floor. She’d have to find another way to get into the police station.
Another figure bolted into the darkness of the alley and stopped on the opposite wall. The girl’s hand moved quickly to her belt, but the figure already had his gun trained on her. She could hear the weapon buzzing with a charged shot, the faintest blue glow shining in the barrel.
“Hands were I can see them or I’ll shoot,” the young man ordered, his voice even and serious.
The girl slowly removed her hands from her belt and held them both up before her as she stood up. Her assailant wasn’t much older than her, very likely human too, and he also looked to be out of breath.
They stood like that across from each other for a few seconds more before the girl caught sight of a black and maroon uniform back at the entrance to the alleyway. She slowly sank back down behind her hiding spot and nodded towards the officer so that the boy with the gun could see him too. He glanced at the man and then backed up against the wall as if that would conceal him better.
Once she was safely ducked behind the outcropping again, she motioned for the boy to join her and quickly. The boy didn’t seem too keen on the idea from the glare he shot at her, but he quickly complied and ducked down beside her. There were footsteps echoing in the narrow alley now and they could hear the man whispering something through his communicator.
The girl reached down for her belt again and pulled out a small stun gun from its holster. The boy watched her dubiously, but she nodded to him in reassurance. He narrowed his eyes searchingly at her, but finally nodded in return, making some military hand signal. She shrugged to show that she didn’t speak military hand signals and he simply rolled his eyes.
The police officer stepped into view and the boy quickly kicked the man’s feet out from under him. The officer fell forward onto the pavement and the girl quickly shot him with her stun gun. He fell down unconscious without a fight and with hardly a sound.
“Not bad, red,” the boy sighed as he checked the officer for a pulse.
“Thank you,” the girl started to reply, but she swallowed her words when the young man trained his gun on her again.
“Now, who are you?” the boy demanded, his expression cold.
The girl stared passed the barrel straight at him, her mouth hanging open in shock. “Illyana DeCosta…” she replied.

Teen Titans - Duplicity

"So, I've been reworking and rewriting and rethinking this poor Teen Titans story for a long while now and I still can't get it good enough to post in its entirety. I do know for sure that I like this scene, which is why I've decided to go ahead and share it.
I will get this done! My poor Teen Titans stories have been so neglected for oh so long! Not to mention my poor OCs Kenji and Duplicate!" -Casey

[We open to the streets of Jump city which are teeming with pedestrians out for a stroll in the afternoon sun. Pan down to street level to focus in on a storm drain.]
[Black ooze tinted with blue slides up and out of the drain. It then runs along the street like water until it comes to the edge of the Titan’s favorite Pizza place.]
[The ooze jumps out of the street and melts slowly underneath one of the columns that hold up the balcony.]
[Pan the camera back up from the ground as a rather Goth looking young man walks down the sidewalk, a burst of confetti and streamers shoot over him with a loud fanfare.]
[He looks up with distain at the balcony of the Pizza Restaurant above him, where he can clearly hear a group of teenagers shouting jubilantly.]

Cyborg off camera: Let’s hear it for the birthday boy!
Starfire off camera: Oh yes! A most joyful birthday to you, my friend!

[Panning up to the balcony, we find the Teen Titans and Duplicate all sitting around a table that is surrounded by wrapped presents. Beast Boy is wearing a party hat and directly in front of him on the table is a rather large chocolate cake with 14 candles on top of it.]

Beast Boy: I’ve got the perfect wish in mind!

[Beast Boy stands up from his chair and takes a step back with a look of determination on his face. He puts his hands up in front of him to frame the cake in his sights. He then takes a deep breath and blows out every one of the candles.]
[He smiles triumphantly and takes a low bow as his friends clap politely. He then sits back down and proceeds to cut the cake into six large slices.]

Beast Boy: So, now that I’m a year older, I suppose I should start thinking up a new name.

[Beast Boy slides plates of cake to Cyborg and Raven across the table.]

Duplicate: What is it with you and names?

[Beast Boy hands a slice to Starfire and Robin who are on either side of him.]

Beast Boy: Beast “Boy” just seems keyed a little young for a mature teen like myself.

[Beast Boy slides a slice of cake over to Duplicate who sits between Robin and Cyborg.]

Duplicate: You’re still the youngest member of the team, aren’t you?

[Beast Boy yanks the slice of cake back just as Duplicate reaches out for it. The green teen narrows his eyes at the other boy.]

Beast Boy: Says who? For all we know, you could be younger than me!

[Duplicate turns to look at Robin and then puts his hand up to comparatively measure his height against Robin’s.]
[Robin notices this and stares at Duplicate’s hand quizzically, before the boy lowers it with a shrug.]

Duplicate: Robin and I are about the same height. I guess that makes us the same age.
Beast Boy: That doesn’t prove anything. For all we know, you may not even be old enough to be a Teen Titan.
Raven: Just give the kid his cake.

[Beast Boy turns to look at Raven and Duplicate grabs his slice of cake while he’s distracted.]
[Beast Boy frowns disappointedly and then slumps back in his seat to eat his own slice of cake.]
[Starfire turns to Duplicate with a concerned expression.]

Starfire: Do not be troubled, friend Duplicate. I am quite sure that you are indeed of adolescence.

[Duplicate turns to Starfire, wiping the chocolate frosting from his lips on his hand.]

Duplicate: Uh, thanks, Starfire. Back at ya?
Starfire: I simply do not wish you to feel sorrow due to your lost memory.
Duplicate: Hey, don’t worry about it. Robin’s working every possible lead to help me get it back, right?

[Robin nods with a confident smile.]

Duplicate: See? The amnesia thing isn’t a problem.

[Cyborg stands up and grabs one of the many surrounding presents.]

Cyborg: Alright then! Whadda ya say we open presents now?!

[Duplicate’s smile droops, he blinks rapidly, and a sweat drop slides down the side of his face.]
[Raven glances over at him with a raised eyebrow.]

Raven: You forgot yours at the tower, didn’t you?

[Duplicate shrugs nervously.]

Duplicate: Heh, heh…oops?

[Beast Boy slaps both his hands down on the table and then points to Duplicate reproachfully, startling everyone.]

Beast Boy: And even if I am the youngest member of the team, I’m still the one the one that took down the entire Brotherhood of Evil almost single handedly!

[As Beast Boy stands pointing at Duplicate, Raven crosses her arms and Robin shakes his head disappointedly. Duplicate smiles and turns to Raven with a nod towards Beast Boy.]

Duplicate: L'esprit de l'escalier, eh?

[Beast Boy lowers his hand and frowns in confusion and the other Titans all turn to Duplicate in surprise.]
[Duplicate looks back and forth between his friends, puzzled.]

Duplicate: What? Is there frosting on my face?
Raven: Did you just say something in French?
Duplicate: Huh?
Robin: Parlez-vous français ?
Duplicate: Je parle français? *Gasp* Je parle français!

[The entire restaurant rumbles and the presents around them are knocked to the ground. Robin jolts to his feet just in time for the ground to crack underneath him. The floor gives way beneath him and he jumps aside, but Duplicate (who was sitting right next to him) falls through the crack with a yelp.]

Robin: Duplicate!

[Cue Teen Titans Theme song]
