"This snippet features my original characters, Ciar and Perditus. Their story is based in a fairy tale world, so I read through a few of the original Brothers Grimm for some inspiration. This scene was inspired by The Great Horned Owl story." -Casey
Ciar sat against a tree in the shadows, a good ten feet
away from the campfire as he eyed it dubiously. Perditus was only three feet
from the fire, sleeping soundly in the dirt.
A soft, but deep sound like the tune of a horn broke the
silence of the dark forest. Ciar’s gaze followed the sound to the top of a tree
above him and his eyes widened in panic. There was a large horned figure hidden
so well among the branches that Ciar only noticed it because of its eyes. They
were two bright orbs of yellow light, staring down at him piercingly and
unnervingly.
“Perditus!” Ciar whispered, but the elf didn’t move.
“Perry!” he hissed, throwing a pebble at his friend’s
head. “Wake up!”
“Hmm? Huh?” Perditus answered, uncurling from the fetal
position.
“There’s something in the trees.” Ciar hissed, causing
Perditus to freeze as still as a board, his eyes going wide.
“What is it?” the elf whispered back.
In answer, Ciar pointed to the creature staring down at
them and Perditus slowly turned to look at it as well. The silhouette up in the
trees turned slightly towards the elf and the soft deep sound rang out again.
Perditus smiled and sat up with a chuckle. “Oh, it’s only
an owl, Ciar,” he said, shaking his head at his companion’s trepidation.
Perditus then called to the bird in his old Gaelic tongue and the owl called
back with a strong, “Hoot, hoot, hoot. Hoot, hooooot.”
Perditus then curled back into a ball to settle back down
for the night. “Get some sleep, Ciar,” he muttered. “The owl will keep watch.”
Ciar watched in amazement as Perditus fell back asleep.
He then looked back up towards the owl, who was staring at him again. After a
moment, the bird turned its head all the way around and Ciar turned away with a
shutter.
