"This is from my Science Fiction story that is still lacking a title. I started reading through some writing prompts I had on Pinterest and ended up with this scene. I am now seriously considering writing this story as a novel rather than in script format." -Casey
The
streets were fully of businessmen carrying brief cases and talking aloud to
holograms as they walked. Tall buildings surrounded them, some of them square,
more of them strange tessellations that looked like they might fall over at any
time. Traffic buzzed high above them on thin rails, weaving through the city
much like the citizens below. Everything moved like a well oiled machine, the
sun rising above it all to cast long shadows that the citizens hardly even
notice.
The harmony
was broken in an instant by a young girl with bright red hair. She ran through
the pale crowd of strangers at a frantic pace, nearly knocking over people who
didn’t notice her in time. No one had to wonder for long about from what she
was running. Three police officers shoved through the crowd after her, their
black and maroon uniforms flashing at their belts and vests with flashing
emergency lights.
No
one made any move to stop the girl as she fled and finally she was starting to
gain some ground. She diverted from the main road into a shopping center where
many different stores lined the streets. The girl quickly ducked into one of
these shops and zipped through it straight towards the back door, grabbing a
long black cape off a display shelf as she went.
An
alarm sounded and people shouted after her as she ran out the door, but she
didn’t stop. Instead, she ducked into the very next store down the street and
took a moment to dawn the cape and pull the hood over her head. She lingered at
a display of neck collars and other rather large pieces of jewelry, blending in
with many of the other shopper.
The
police ran by the shop’s glass doors and a few moments later, the girl exited
the shop through the front entrance. She glanced around nervously and then made
her way down to a long winding staircase across the street. The steps led to a
platform station above all the shops where a public rail transport was gliding
by on a thin wire. As the girl made her way to the platform for the next rail,
she smiled to herself under her hood with a sigh of relief.
The
transport glided beside her, announcements ringing overhead in an alien
language and when the doors opened, about five other officers stood just behind
them in the long cylindrical vehicle. The girl turned on her heals and shoved
her way back through the crowd that was eager to board the transport. One
rather unladylike woman shoved her aside rudely and her hood slipped back.
“There
she is!” cried a voice from behind her.
The
girl ran back down the steps in a mad panic, jumping down the last flight of
stairs and taking off down the streets again. She weaved between as many
buildings as she could, hoping to lose her pursuers more easily. She panted
heavily and stumbled to the ground, rolling forward a few steps before she
regained her footing. She shook her hand lightly at the wrist with a scowl and
then dashed in-between two buildings that met just above her, creating a sort
of covered alleyway.
The
girl ducked behind one of the strange outcropping of the buildings and fought
to keep her breathing at no more than a faint hiss. She listened intently for a
few moments, but no sirens blared and there were no shots for her capture. She
sighed again as she rolled her eyes in exasperation, dropping the cape she had
stolen to the floor. She’d have to find another way to get into the police
station.
Another
figure bolted into the darkness of the alley and stopped on the opposite wall.
The girl’s hand moved quickly to her belt, but the figure already had his gun
trained on her. She could hear the weapon buzzing with a charged shot, the
faintest blue glow shining in the barrel.
“Hands
were I can see them or I’ll shoot,” the young man ordered, his voice even and
serious.
The
girl slowly removed her hands from her belt and held them both up before her as
she stood up. Her assailant wasn’t much older than her, very likely human too,
and he also looked to be out of breath.
They
stood like that across from each other for a few seconds more before the girl
caught sight of a black and maroon uniform back at the entrance to the
alleyway. She slowly sank back down behind her hiding spot and nodded towards
the officer so that the boy with the gun could see him too. He glanced at the
man and then backed up against the wall as if that would conceal him better.
Once
she was safely ducked behind the outcropping again, she motioned for the boy to
join her and quickly. The boy didn’t seem too keen on the idea from the glare
he shot at her, but he quickly complied and ducked down beside her. There were
footsteps echoing in the narrow alley now and they could hear the man whispering
something through his communicator.
The
girl reached down for her belt again and pulled out a small stun gun from its
holster. The boy watched her dubiously, but she nodded to him in reassurance.
He narrowed his eyes searchingly at her, but finally nodded in return, making
some military hand signal. She shrugged to show that she didn’t speak military
hand signals and he simply rolled his eyes.
The
police officer stepped into view and the boy quickly kicked the man’s feet out
from under him. The officer fell forward onto the pavement and the girl quickly
shot him with her stun gun. He fell down unconscious without a fight and with
hardly a sound.
“Not
bad, red,” the boy sighed as he checked the officer for a pulse.
“Thank
you,” the girl started to reply, but she swallowed her words when the young man
trained his gun on her again.
“Now,
who are you?” the boy demanded, his expression cold.
The
girl stared passed the barrel straight at him, her mouth hanging open in shock.
“Illyana DeCosta…” she replied.
